Welcoming May in the English Countryside: Slow Living, Lemon Cake & Rustic Home Decor

Slow life in the English countryside at the cusp of May, the gateway to Summer here in the UK. In this video, I’m preparing my home to reflect the beauty of nature at this time of year by adding natural elements and greenery. You can find many of the items I styled throughout my home in our shop. I’m also baking a delicious lemon cake, which I decorated with daisies from our backyard.

The peaceful beauty of the English Countryside

Spring has settled in Somerset, and with only days left until May, I can feel the sense of change all around me. May in the English countryside is a gateway to Summer - everything bursts into life. It’s also a reminder of how quickly the seasons turn, so I’m making every effort to enjoy these days without rushing, choosing calm over busy.

Easy & delicious Lemon Clotted Cream Cake with Drizzle

One of my favourite ways to keep a seasonal home is to bake in tune with the time of year. With the world warming up, many of us start daydreaming and planning for Summer - I certainly am. As a shopkeeper, I’ve already updated the shop with Summer home decor items. And in my private life, when I cook or bake, I choose recipes that are light, fresh, and tangy—perfect for the sunny, warm days ahead.

In this video, I’m baking a lemon cake with a lemon curd drizzle. Within minutes of it being ready, a quarter was gone (thanks to my husband) so I guess it turned out alright!

Rustic Early Summer Decor Ideas for a Cosy Countryside Home

I’m updating my living room for May, following the lead of Mother Nature. The world around us is green and growing more abundant each day, and I want to reflect that inside my home while also keeping it cosy and welcoming for my family. I love mixing new and rustic elements for that charming country look.

Bringing in natural elements like baskets and greenery - whether in the form of wreaths or bouquets of flowers - is such a simple way to make your home feel closer to nature. It’s also calming for our eyes and minds to have the colour green around us. Studies have shown that looking at green reduces stress, calms the nervous system and brings feelings of hope and balance, thanks to its association with nature. I also strongly believe that keeping our homes pleasant and clutter-free is simply good for our minds and hearts.
