5 Non-Tacky Valentine’s Day Home Decor Ideas to Celebrate Love
Valentine's Day is coming – do you celebrate? Although in today's world this day is mainly seen as a celebration of romantic love, it has its origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia (February 13–15), a time to celebrate fertility and the coming of Spring.
Here in Somerset, UK, mid-February feels like the start of something new. Nature is already slowly awakening, with the first Spring flowers blooming and willow catkins appearing. The weather grows warmer, the days become longer – it feels like the perfect time to start anticipating the arrival of Spring.
I’ve always had a soft spot for Valentine’s Day. I still remember 20–25 years ago, teenage Adriana walking home from school. I’d always stop to admire the newly decorated shop windows – slightly tacky but oh-so-cute, filled with heart-shaped balloons and confetti. Those red and pink displays brightened up the streets during the grey end of Winter, with its melting snow and slushy puddles.
Back then, I didn’t even have a boyfriend. It took me years to learn that love comes in all forms: children, family, friends, pets, home and of course, self-love (which is often the hardest one!).
So, to answer my own question – yes, I do celebrate. I keep it simple but still enjoy making Valentine-themed desserts and adding cosy touches to my home to mark the occasion. For me, it’s part of living seasonally – celebrating the little things, making special days and seasons feel unique.
Here are 5 ideas to add tasteful Valentine’s decor to your home:
1. Fresh Flowers
You really can’t go wrong with flowers! “These flowers look tacky” said no one ever. My favourites are white and pink tulips and roses, but there’s so much choice. Choose something that’s not only beautiful but meaningful – perhaps the first flowers your husband gave you or ones that remind you of someone you love, like your grandma or mum.
2. Rustic and Simple Home Decor
The best decor is the kind you can enjoy even after the occasion. If you know me (from my YouTube channel, Instagram or this blog), you’ll know I’m all about curating cosy, rustic decor - you can find our cosy country collection here
This Valentine’s, I’ve sourced some lovely pieces – delicate white tea light holders and rustic candlestick holders. They’re perfect for this holiday, but they’ll also look beautiful for Mother’s Day or an Easter tablescape.
3. Candles with a Message
Did you know we also offer personalised candles? This Valentine’s add a special touch to your home with a candle featuring a custom message. You can type in anything you like – a quote, his name, the date you got married – or choose one of our premade candles like personalised “I love you more, the end, I win” or even this rather cheeky one.
4. DIY Valentine’s Decor
A mindful, creative way to celebrate. Why not involve your children (if you have them) and teach them about the seasons and why we mark special days like Valentine’s? I’m planning to make a DIY garland and do plenty of baking (I'll share everything on my YT channel) - a simple, joyful way to embrace the day.
5. Create Ambience with Music
I adore ambience videos on YouTube and have favorites for every season and celebration. For Valentine’s, I love:
- Jane Austen Kind of Romance
- Soft and Sleepy Piano Songs
- Hogsmeade Valentine’s Madam Puddifoot’s Tea Shop
- Making Love Potion with Hermione
- Sooth Jazz with Fireplace
I hope this little list inspires you this Valentine’s Day. Even if you’re not fully into the Valentine’s aesthetic, celebrating small joys and moments is always worth it – they’re the ones that add up to the bigger picture of our lives.
