Discover Luckington: A Charming Cotswolds Village and Pride & Prejudice Filming Location
Tranquil countryside village church that is also a "Pride and Prejudice" filming location? Sign me up! The church, located in the tiny village of Luckington in the picturesque Cotswolds, is one of my favourite places to visit. It quite literally encapsulates the feeling of the English countryside, and it’s no surprise it was chosen—alongside a nearby manor—to be featured in the adaptation of Britain’s most beloved book by Jane Austen.
The village of Luckington has been recorded in The Domesday Book of 1086, with two manors and 21 households. Today, Luckington has a population of 630 people and covers 790 square miles, of which some 80% is farmland. Nearly half of the buildings are Grade II listed, meaning they are of special architectural or historic interest, warranting every effort to preserve them.
Two of the most well-known buildings are the Church of St Mary and St Ethelbert, dating back to the 12th century, and the nearby Luckington Court, dating back to the 16th century, both featured in the 1995 TV adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice" - my favourite adaptation of them all! The church was featured in many scenes in the background, and of course, in the final scene of the wedding of Mr. Darcy and Lizzie (and Bingley and Jane).
The church has a convenient car park right next to the gate, but if I can give you a tip—make an effort and park in the village. There is plenty of space on the side of the road near the village green, and walk to the church. The long stretch of country road that leads to the church is, in my opinion, part of the charm. The landscape surrounding the church hasn’t changed much for centuries, and people from hundreds of years ago walked the same road, looking at the same view we get to admire today. If Lizzie Bennet were real, this is the view she would see every day! By choosing to walk to the church, we get to follow in the footsteps of our favourite heroine.
Right next to the church on the left is Luckington Court, which was used as the Bennet family house, Longbourn. The house is private with no public access, so I don’t have any photos to share with you, BUT the house is for sale, and you can have a peek inside HERE. The asking price is a whopping 5 million British pounds, but my gosh, the inside of the house is breathtaking!
The Luckington church is only a small place, but it’s full of interesting things that will take time to explore. From the historical graves that have been restored thanks to local fundraising, to the information about the filming of the TV series and other famous people who used to live in the village or contributed to it, to the little footpath behind the church that leads into the farmlands—there’s lots to see and experience in this charming Cotswolds village!
On our way back home, we stopped for lunch at the charming country pub (and hotel), Cross Hands in Old Sodbury. Lovely food, friendly staff, and beautiful interiors with original features of the 14th-century posting house. We enjoyed coffee, seasonal sandwiches, and shared skin-on chips that were delicious - we definitely will be back!
