Autumn Countdown Week 2: Preparing for the Season Ahead
Welcome to Week 2 of our Autumn Countdown! Summer is in full swing, gardens are abundant with fruits and vegetables and we can already sense a gentle shift in the air, reminding us to begin preparing for Autumn, just as generations before us once did.
This countdown is a small way to pause, notice and embrace the ever-turning wheel of the natural world - honouring the first blooms and ripening fruits, the coming harvest and the gentle shift from the endless days of Summer into the calm and cosiness of Autumn.

Today marks 11 weeks until Autumn!
You’re here because you probably - just like me - love Autumn. Although I’ve taught myself to find love and appreciation for every season, seeking beauty and joy in each day of the year, Autumn remains my favourite.
To me, the air just smells different during the “BER” months (September, October, November, December) and feels magical. The cosiness, the warmth of home, the moody skies, the gentle chill in the air and pumpkin everything - they all make my heart beat faster, even now as I’m writing these words, haha!

Why Do You Love Autumn So Much?
You probably, just like me, prefer a slower pace of life and have a deep appreciation for nature, family and home. You likely notice the beauty in small things, relish quiet moments and find meaning in simplicity and the rhythms of the natural world. It’s no wonder Autumn might be your favourite season too.
For the second week of our countdown, I thought it would be worth reflecting on why we love Autumn so much. After somed research, I’ve learned that Autumn influences us on emotional, psychological and physical levels in the best possible ways. No surprise so many of us get hooked on the way this season makes us feel.
1. Nostalgia & Future - Autumn evokes memories of childhood, school days, family gatherings and festive traditions. It gives us emotional warmth, like a hug for the soul. Even more beautifully, now as adults, many of us try to create similar memories and feelings for our own families.
2. Natural Beauty - The changing leaves, golden light and earthy tones bring a sense of peace, contentment and appreciation for the natural world. In evolutionary psychology, warm colours like orange, red and brown are associated with safety and nourishment. Oranges and reds are linked to edible foods such as berries, ripe fruit, and cooked meats, while browns are connected to earth and shelter.
3. Symbolism of Change - The season of letting go (think: falling leaves) resonates with emotional and psychological release. Many of us feel inspired to declutter our homes - and sometimes even our friends list...
4. Routine and Stability - With the kids back in school and holidays behind us, Autumn brings back comforting routines and a sense of structure so needed in daily life. (This one is a big one for me personally!)
5. Psychological Comfort - Home-centred rituals (warm drinks, candles, nesting) and not feeling pressured to go anywhere create emotional safety and calm.
6. Comfortable Weather - The cool, crisp air is easier to enjoy than the heat of Summer, making both outdoor walks and quiet moments at home feel more pleasant.
7. Seasonal Foods - Pumpkins, apples, spices... Autumn food is nourishing, grounding and warming, used in both healthy and comforting dishes.
8. Better Sleep - Cooler evenings improve our sleep quality, which positively impacts mood and health.
9. Reduced Overstimulation - With fewer social demands and longer evenings, the season encourages a slower pace and a quieter, more comforting way of life.
10. Anticipation - Autumn gives us things to look forward to: Halloween, harvest celebrations, cosy holidays - feeding our sense of joy and connection with family and the community.
This Week’s Gentle Task
Take a quiet moment this week to ask yourself: If Autumn were a feeling, what would it be for you? Cosiness? Calm? Comfort? Safety? Mystery?
And how might you re-create - even just a little bit of - that feeling during Summer?
I’d love to read your thoughts in the comments, if you feel happy to share. By sharing, we can inspire one another <3
My answer:
For me, it’s three things.
First, the cosiness of my home, which comes back into focus as the days grow colder and darker. Each Autumn, I re-discover my love for home, my old sweaters and eagerly reach for books and movies I know by heart.
Second, it’s how nature makes me feel at this time of year - a mix of calm, nostalgia, a sense of things ending and the quiet anticipation of the stillness Winter will bring.
It does something to my soul I can’t quite put into words, but I hope I’m managing to share it through my videos.
Lastly, it’s the sense of order and routine being restored. I’m sure I’m not the only one who relishes those early days of September, when the children are back in school and the house feels calm and quiet again after the busy Summer holiday period. BTW this must have been the best part of the year for Molly Weasley, lol!
How I try to recreate Autumn feelings in Summer:
I bring a bit of seasonal cosiness into Summer by decorating my home and baking in tune with the seasons, even months. If I could, I’d forever be making carrot cakes and cinnamon rolls - but in Spring and Summer, I embrace lemony, minty and strawberry recipes, baking with whatever Mother Nature offers at this time of the year
When it comes to nature, I comfort myself with early Spring flowers and then, as Summer arrives, I begin looking for the first signs of late Summer and Autumnal staples starting to unfold like wild blackberries and apple blossom. I also grow pumpkins and closely observe them at every stage, knowing full well that these little green fruits will eventually turn into our cherished Autumn favourites.
A Few Closing Words
Thank you for being here for Week 2. I hope this slow start has sparked something in you - maybe a sense of nostalgia, calm or simply the joy of looking ahead.
Next week marks a turning point of the year - the Summer Solstice, after which the days begin to shorten! I hope to see you next Sunday on the blog for week no. 3 of our Autumn 2025 countdown
